The cheapest way to experience the Maasai Mara

The Maasai Mara is world-famous for good reason—its sheer abundance of wildlife packed into a small area is unmatched. Thanks to its productive climate and fertile soil, the Mara boasts a high density of animals, making it a dream for wildlife enthusiasts.

The Mara is perhaps the best location in the world to see Africa's big cats

With the Maasai Mara being at the top of so many travel bucket lists, it’s no wonder that it’s often seen as one of Africa’s must-visit destinations. From the incredible wildlife to the breathtaking vistas, the Mara truly has it all.

However, experiencing the Mara doesn’t come cheap. Many camps and lodges within the Reserve charge a staggering $1,500 or more per person, per night. For many, this makes a trip to the Mara seem impossible. But there’s a way to enjoy this world-class destination without emptying your savings.

Cheap Maasai Mara safaris

If you're dreaming of a Maasai Mara safari but don’t want to break the bank, there are several cheap ways to make it happen. Many budget camps and hotels outside the Reserve offer day trips into the National Reserve, giving you a chance to witness the wildlife that makes the Mara so special.

However, staying outside the Reserve comes with some compromises. Instead of drifting off to the sound of lions roaring, you’re more likely to fall asleep to the noise of barking dogs or nearby music. You’ll also likely be packed into a small van with other tourists, which can make it harder to focus on the wildlife you came to see. So, while these options are cheaper, they might not deliver the classic safari experience you’re picturing.

Why Tor’s Camp?

The biggest advantage of staying at Tor’s Camp is our unbeatable location. Situated inside the Maasai Mara National Reserve, nestled among the meanders of the Olare Orok river, you’ll be fully immersed in the wild, experiencing the classic safari you’ve always dreamed of. Our camp is located within the territory of the Topi Pride, the largest pride in the Mara, with over 20 members and three dominant males. This means you’ll likely fall asleep to the sound of lions roaring nearby—a true safari experience!

We’re also lucky to have a pod of hippos living right next to the camp. You can easily wander over and see these magnificent creatures up close, making your stay at Tor’s Camp even more unique and memorable.

Our new budget friendly options

At Tor’s Camp, we now offer more budget-friendly options to accommodate every type of traveller. Whether you want an all-inclusive experience or a more hands-on adventure, we have something for you.

For the ultimate luxury on a budget, our most glamorous tent is available for just $275 per person per night (non-resident). (For more info see Our Rates). This includes a heritage tent equipped with modern plumbing, electricity, all meals, including packed breakfasts and lunches for your game drives.

It’s an incredible value compared to the $1,500+ charged by many other camps in the Reserve.

Private guides and vehicles

At Tor’s Camp, we partner with local freelance guides, supporting the community while ensuring an authentic, top-tier safari experience. Each guide is highly trained and professional, equipped with modified 4x4 Land Cruisers designed for optimal wildlife viewing. With a private guide and vehicle, you're in control of your safari—spend as much time as you want at each sighting without accommodating other guests’ preferences. For just $200 per day per car (up to 6 people), you can enjoy a personalized and unforgettable Maasai Mara safari without breaking the bank.

Private vehicles are for hire for just 200 USD per day and can fit up to 6 people. Meaning larger groups can save money.

Self-service safari: The best budget option within the Reserve.

For those who want to fully immerse themselves in the wilderness while keeping costs down, a self-service safari is a fantastic alternative. With this option, you bring your own food, and the camp provides accommodation and a guide. It offers a more authentic experience without the high price tag of a full-board stay. Self-service in our most glamorous Mtoni tents goes for just 204 USD per person per day. (See Our Rates for more)

Many of Tor's Camp tents are equipped with their own dining tables and kitchenettes. Imagine a bush AirBnB.

At Tor’s Camp, we specialize in self-service safaris, offering a range of accommodation options to fit different budgets. Each tent includes a self-service kitchen, allowing you to cook up your own meals at a fraction of the price. For as little as $204 per person per night, you’ll have access to a fully furnished heritage tent, within the Maasai Mara Reserve. If you want to make your stay even easier, we can arrange for a chef to prepare meals—just bring the ingredients, and we’ll take care of the rest!

Money-Saving Tips

Arriving in the Afternoon?

If you're driving from Nairobi and arriving at the Sekenani Gate late in the day, save money by purchasing a transit ticket to the camp instead of a full park ticket. Spend the evening relaxing at camp—enjoy a drink by the fire, check out the hippos, and unwind. The next morning, head into the park with your guide and buy a full-day ticket at one of the nearby gates or airstrips. This strategy can save you up to $200 per person (high season) or $100 (low season).

Travel in a Group

Traveling with a group can significantly reduce costs, including transfers to and from Nairobi. Larger groups can split the cost of the guide and vehicle, making the safari experience more affordable for everyone.

Visit During Low Season

The low season runs from January to June, with park fees at $100 per person per day, compared to $200 during the high season (for non-residents). While the Mara may experience more rain, the wildlife viewing is still incredible, the scenery breathtaking, and you'll benefit from fewer tourists, resulting in more intimate and private wildlife encounters.

Go self-service

With many of our tents set up with their own kitchens, you can bring your own food drink and save money opting for a self-service option.

Book Your Affordable Safari

At Tor’s Camp, we believe that everyone should have the chance to experience the wonders of the Maasai Mara. Whether you're planning a self-service safari or want to book a fully guided and catered experience, we're here to help you create unforgettable memories—all while saving you money.
