Camping vs. glamping in the Masai Mara

Here at Tor’s Camp we offer a range of accommodation options, with varying degrees of comfort for all types of people.

Camping

Camping is your back to the basics option where you come with your own tent and equipment. Your level of comfort is dependent on how much equipment you want to bring. Although, we highly recommend bringing at least a tent to Tor’s Camp otherwise you may get too up close and personal with some of our night time visitors to camp!

Tor’s Campsites are situated within the shaded riverine forest of Olare Orok river, with plenty of space to pitch your tents and park your cars. The campsite is just a short distance from our communal areas which is comprised of a large welcome tent with charging points, sofas and 4G connection. Our Maasai-style shower block provides hot showers for our campers on request, perfect to wash the savanna dust off after a long day game viewing.

Although camping is our most basic option, each campsite comes with exclusive use of a few extra amenities that can make the experience feel more luxurious. Including, a canvas mess tent to give you cover on those rainy nights, a charcoal BBQ for cooking, a table, and paraffin lamps to set the safari mood.

Once you arrive our staff will be happy to help you set up and provide you firewood. After a hot shower, hot meal and a few cold G+Ts you can fall asleep to a night time orchestra of lions and hyenas. Wake up, hop in the car and immediately be in one of the best wildlife viewing areas in the world.

If you choose the camping option you should bring your own tents, bedding, cooking equipment and food. If you want to save space in the car and add some more luxury to your stay. You can hire canvas camping chairs and bed rolls.

To step up from camping to glamping you can rent out some of our iconic bell tents, a tepee like tent that can comfortably fit three people. Not only does this save space in your car (more room for beer), it also takes away the hassle of setting up and taking down which means you can focus more on the fun things, like game viewing.

Riverside Glamping Tents

We recommend our Riverside Glamping tents for our guests who like to have some luxury. Our fully furnished riverside tents come with a double bed (or two singles), clothing storage as well as their own private rustic bathrooms with flushing toilets and open showers.

The two riverside tents have a shared fully furnished kitchen with a gas cooker, sink and plenty of storage.

Our glamping option aims to make it as easy, and comfortable, as possible for you. With beds, tents and a kitchen. All you need to do is pack your clothes, food, cooking equipment and a few crates of beer.

At the moment there is no fridge in our camping areas, however we would be happy to provide ice for your cool box, additionally we have a solar powered freezer in the back of house to keep things frozen for you if you desire.

Our rustic, simple tents are nestled in the trees, with a nice view of the river and opposing bank. Although, more glamourous then our camping options, you are still very much in the wild of the African bush which adds to the allure of these options. You will still get an authentic wilderness experience.

So whatever your camping preference, here at Tor’s we aim to satisfy them all while still giving you that sense of adventure that we want from the African bush.
